I have been an audiophile for over 35 years and I have to say I have finally heard digital audio done right with the combination of the Korg DS DAC-100 and Audiogate Software.
Digital Audio has always come off wrong no matter how much money I spent. From my first Sony CDP-101 back in 1983, thru all my modded Audio Alchemy gear in the 90's, Northstar in the early 0's, on into computer audio with Empirical Audio Pace Car & Off Ramps with NOS DAC's. I have spent more money chasing the digital dream and yet my trusty Technics SL-1610 MkII turntable continued to deliver more real & natural sounding music than all of that digital combined.
Well that was until the Korg DAC-100 and Audiogate 3 Software arrived. If you have been waiting to dip you toes into the Computer Audio world, I can unequivocally say that digital audio has finally arrived, 35 years after CD's promise of "perfect sound forever".
Not only does this DAC deliver the sound of real music, the Audiogate Software makes selecting your music an absolute dream.
You simply set the software to up-sample all your music files to 5.64 mHz (DSDx2 or DSD 128) kick back and listen to real sounding music.
Not sure what Korg's done inside of Audigate, but whatever they've done they set the digital bar off the scale. Yes I have lived with all the other hi-end software players; Amarra, Audivarna, Pure Music, JRiver. While they all provide "audiophile differences" none of them come close to improvements that the Audiogate software provides. Even the free version of Audiogate (48 kHz max) beats these contenders to my ears, give it a try. (While JRiver also offer's DSDx2 up-sampling "on the fly", it pales in comparison) FYI you have to hook up a Korg DAC to get the awesome sounding DSDx2 using Audiogate, its max output is 192/24 (once unlocked) using other brand DAC's. Audiogate 3 is super slick, simple to use, and does everything I need in a computer music interface.
Korg should really re-think their policy and offer Audiogate as a standalone program ... $30 sounds fair.
Getting back to the Korg DAC-100, while it will give you 24 hours of great sound, it tanks shortly after and takes forever to get back on full song. Just like my Resonessence HP, these new DAC's are loaded with surface mount resistors & capacitors that take "forever" to break-in. I'm talking 24 hours a day for 3 weeks ... painful ... if your an audiophile trying to listen through it. Not only that, but I found each output needs its own break-in period, it took a separate 3 weeks for the Headphone Jack. (Haven't even attempted the balanced output) I tried breaking in both the RCA output and Headphone at the same time, but I think the voltage drop prevented either from "getting there". Korg is going to have there hands full with professional reviewers unless they are smart enough to send out fully run in DAC's. I have my doubt's and expect reviews all over the map. What a shame because once the DAC-100 is fully run it will give the best DAC's on the planet a run for there money. Yes it's that good!
While Audiogate can upsample even your MP3's to DSD, it sounds best with properly ripped CD's. I could easily hear the difference between .flac files and uncompressed .aiff or .wav files. I recommend ripping to .aiff with XLD or DBPoweramp using a quality CD ROM, the differences are clearly evident. Why aiff, because Audiogate will automatically display your cover art. I also like what Audiogate did with my hi-rez 96/24 & 192/24 files, much more natural sounding to my ears.
So ... to Korg or not to Korg?
