הייתי לוקח את M51 לבדיקה בבית. מה יכול להיות יותר טוב מזה ?

website here in BeNeLux did comparison on the Dac-V1 versus NAD M51. Using Google Translate, this is what the review brought:

DAC Review : The NAD M51 DAC takes on the Naim DAC V1
Two similarly priced DACs : more of the same or totally different ?
DACs are "hot" . And not a little bit, but really piping hot . Besides upgrading an aging CD player or a new BluRay player (which was very cheap at a discount store , but at home turns out not to sound as good ) , streaming audio can often significantly benefit from a high quality DAC . The flat screen TVs , featuring a beautiful image but have a lean sound , can be connected. Audio system via a DAC And finally, more and more people want to use a laptop as a music source , allowing a USB connection has become inevitable.

There are very affordable DACs ( see that review ) , with built-in amplifiers DACs (like these two ) and heavy caliber High End DACs (such as this ) . Mid DACs remains , oddly enough , a bit underexposed .
I 'm going to do something today . Because besides the great sounding Naim DAC V1 ( see the review part 1, 2 and 3 ) there for some time also almost equal priced DAC NAD .

description
The Naim DAC V1 I have described in detail in the above-mentioned three-part review , so I focus here on the NAD M51 Direct Digital DAC , as he is called in full .
NAD is known for affordable audio components , which sound much better than you would expect for that price . NAD but also builds the more expensive " Masters Series " , which aims at a higher segment . The M51 is part of the "Masters Series" and therefore has a lot of high technology under the hood . The basis of the M51 is the " Direct Digital " technology developed by NAD . Incoming digital signals are converted to PCM ( Pulse Code Modulation ) of PWM ( Pulse Width Modulation ) with a sampling rate of 844kHz , controlled by a 108MHz processor / clock that the signal is also recognized lures . Because of this jitter will be almost entirely eliminated. The 35bit architecture provides enough "headroom " to keep . Extremely low noise and distortion The signal remains almost the entire process digitally ; until just before the output is converted to analog. Of course with a Class A circuit . NAD has the M2 Amplifier / DAC experience gained with this method and the sonic result is so good that NAD this technology now also housed . In a "loose " DAC

The M51 is , as to use the DAC Naim -V1 , as well as a digital pre-amplifier , and is provided with a digital volume control on the basis of a DSP chip. DAC V1 has a digitally controlled analog volume control . Both volume controls work well , but I have a slight preference for the Naim solution . Maybe because I also stem from the analogue era ...
Note that you do not lose the remote , because it is necessary for setup and volume ; except buttons for On / Standby and input selection on the front no buttons / switches available.

A word of praise for the central display , the brightness is adjustable and it is also good to read at a distance . The display shows the selected input , the volume ( when used as a preamp ) and the incoming sample rate are indicated . The latter is ideal to check that the correct resolution is sent by the source. Example, the DAC

At the rear are balanced ( XLR ) and single ended ( RCA ) outputs. Furthermore, six digital inputs: AES / EBU ( XLR ) , S / PDIF ( RCA ) TOSlink , USB ( asynchronous) , 2x HDMI . Accept all connections PCM signals t / m 24-bit/192kHz . Then there is an HDMI output , a USB port for upgrades ( from a USB stick ) and the necessary system connections : RS232 port for home automation systems , a 12V trigger and IR IN . Finally, an on / off switch and connector for the power cable.
Interestingly, the HDMI connections : You can connect a BluRay player , where the audio signal is picked up while the image signal is transmitted to the TV via the HDMI output from the M51 .
Here we also have to address a difference : the M51 has HDMI, the DAC V1 does not . But the DAC V1 has a Class A headphone amplifier on board and which has not . M51 The choice is yours .

used equipment
The listening room Lexicom MultiMedia containing : Naim SUPERNAIT 2 integrated amp , B & W 804 Diamond speakers , NAD M50 network player , NAD M51 DAC , NAD M52 digital music store, Naim DAC V1 , Chord Signature Tuned Aray analog and digital interconnects , Chord Signature speaker cables and a Music Line PowerIgel to power .

listen
To begin with the well-known Keith do not go to the CD Nils Lofgren Acoustic Live . Very cliche , I know, but it often gives a good first impression of the capabilities of the devices to listen . The M51 provides a clear , detailed picture with a deep and wide stereo image . All the sounds of playing the guitar stand out of the speakers. The sound of the strings , the sound box and the attack of the attack are defined razor sharp. The sounds of the audience and the breathing of Nils Lofgren are audible . Also notable is the large presence of acoustic information , so I can hear the audience . Manner of speaking
The DAC V1 is compared rounder , maybe a little softer . The attack is not as razor-sharp , the "noises" ( breath, public) are slightly less pronounced there. The whole is slightly quieter in a delicious way . That is not to say that Naim has a lesser detail view , but he focuses a little more on the music and let the rest take a step back . The percussion on the body of the guitar is even slightly better , with more depth . I have nothing to complain about ; it sounds with both DACs particularly beautiful , but there are differences in emphasis .

A song that I always goes back to my ( analog ) youth, is Old and Wise from the album Eye In The Sky by The Alan Parsons Project . Again, the M51 again super detailed and crystal clear . The playback picture is transparent from front to back . Basins are very good and defined ( no clear hiss ) , the violins and flow nicely through the voice reproduction is superb . The drums have a great attack , I feel the blows almost . The saxophone in the last part is that delicious tearing edge , which I love. One drawback is the obvious thing to " s" sounds , sometimes just a little bit too sharp in this recording .
The DAC V1 shows the number exactly , very realistic way to hear. Again, a wonderful large stereo image , in which the voice is a little more before the band . The cymbals have a comment TT less in the foreground there, but that's not distracting . Despite the slightly rounder tuning the drums here are nice and firm and the edge of the sax is just as tasty eerie presence . The advantage of the DAC V1 : slightly less sharp " s" sounds . That's good , because in the long run can focus interfere. But again, that depends on the recording .

Skip to Adele Make You Feel My Love Album 19 The M51 has me completely in its grip : . Wing is so beautiful that I " WOW ! " Write down . What a richness of sound ! Adele 's voice is clear before the instruments , with some distance . That makes it very deep stage and display spatially . The second voice is at the correct distance behind the voice of Adele . Strings are pretty smooth and individually defined . The beautiful , subtle presentation is really pretty unexpected , because this CD is not particularly well recorded . I have the M51 , which is an admirable way of making music , without cover . Mistakes in recording the more respect I can do nothing else during this song, because the M51 is forcing me to listen .
Again, let the DAC V1 his own version of this song heard. The wing is exactly as beautiful as the M51 , so I enjoy again . It is incredible that such relatively affordable DACs fling with such richness . The DAC V1 is slightly less " in your face " , but the song remains as fascinating . Adele 's voice has the same nuances , but because the DAC V1 is slightly warmer , the song gets more intimate sound , so the emotion comes across even better . All the instruments sound natural. It's hard to choose . Between the M51 and the DAC V1

The classic work is discussed . And yes , you guessed it : my favorite tool is again the CD Arabesque by Crystal Cable . A wonderful sample CD with excellent recording quality I promise I will look to other reference CDs, but they should be just as good !
Because the wing by Adele sounded so beautiful , I now choose track 10 , the Berceuse by Chopin . The M51 does not disappoint : Detailed course , spatial and engaging the instrument is put down for me . The highs twinkling through the listening room and the bass are a beautiful and deep foundation. The music comes to life and drags me along. What should I say? For example, a wing can sound if it has been recorded properly !
The DAC V1 is also a master at convincing drop from a full concert grand piano . Full, rich and nuanced the entire color palette painted in the listening room . Slightly warmer and a shade darker than the M51 . The rarefied spaciousness of this track is available, and no detail escapes me . The body of the wing is nice present and again I do not know what I have to give presentation . Prefer With this number , there is indeed a difference in sound, but not in quality.

Track 15 , the Suite for solo cello by Bach is a piece of cake for the M51 . The sound of the magnificent instrument is very realistic and really presented every detail is audible . Whether the bow or breathing Pieter Wispelwey , deep sound of the cabinet or the sound of the bowed strings , it all comes with as much conviction from the speakers . The presentation of the M51 is so good that there is a clear " live feel " comes to mind . I know perfectly well how a cello " live" sound and the M51 is really very close.
Well , actually I can and the DAC V1 say about the same. With one difference: the slightly rounder , warmer sound of the DAC V1 , not all micro details to assist with the same force in the foreground and a different effect . It does not detract from the drama of the cello or the emotion of the game of Pieter Wispelwey .

To listen to the differences once I choose track 8 , a short guitar playing by the Katona Twins . Allegro from Trio Sonata RV85 Vivaldi . The M51 makes a clear distinction between the two guitars and put both instruments with great precision down . The swirling sounds crystal clear through the listening room and every detail is displayed with great care . The strumming the strings , the micro dynamics , resonant sound boxes and cheerful guitar let this piece of music, dancing pleasure .
The Dac - V1 shows us that he can at least just as good. Again with the difference that the smallest micro details which are placed backwards. That is obviously a deliberate choice of Naim , but listening is not any less . So no difference in quality , but a different view . And I must say that I find very tasty sounding. DAC V1

Now as a solo instruments , but a Baroque orchestra that plays out a lot of Vivaldi La Stravaganza . The M51 is clearly a lot of fun . With lots of energy and lively merriment music comes to me . All melodies and instruments / instrument groups are clearly to follow the broad and deep stereo image . Very detailed and (again ) crystal clear , so I really do not miss anything at all. Delicious ! The M51 is fantastic transparent, so really every single note is heard. Nothing disappears in the fog and the quality of the recording makes music enjoyment only bigger. How would the DAC V1 tackle this piece ?
Very simple : the Naim way . Very musical , detailed, signed by , lively and engaging . Again, I do not miss a thing , just everything is just a little bit rounder , slightly warmer presented. You should expect your details will then lose , but that is not so . Absolutely not . Both DACs make me happy, each in their own way .

Finally, a large symphony orchestra with Danse Macabre by Saint Saëns . The M51 goes all out and let the scale of the orchestra and the dynamics of this piece come fully into its own. The listening room is almost too small for the large stereo image of the M51 . I just do not listen to the music , no, I enjoy the music ! The gorgeous flowing violins , xylophone that cocky claims its place , the violent blows on the timpani , but the triangle , even though he is still so small , to hear above the piece is .
The DAC V1 makes this song shine and makes the latter track into an experience. The looming superstructure cellos , violins on coming and finally the entire orchestra that fills the listening space : DAC V1 has no qualms . The rest of the display image , the characteristic Naim sound that is always attractive , it makes this review interesting , but also difficult .

conclusion
Both DACs clearly hear where they belong in the DAC hierarchy . They are audibly better than the "small" DACjes , but just do not get the level of the " big" DACs . But yes, heavyweights therefore have a price tag that is almost twice as high ( or worse ) .
Both candidates have clearly taken their place in the middle and clearly hear that the middle is definitely worth the effort . It pays to invest in a good DAC !
Each of the two DACs has its specialties : the NAD M51 has HDMI, the Naim DAC V1 has a Class A headphone amplifier on board. But in terms of image quality have both DACs an excellent report . The M51 is crystal-clear and highly transparent . That is incredibly beautiful and the M51 particularly attractive , but can also have a dark side in less good pictures : garbage in is garbage out .
The DAC V1 is slightly warmer , rounder and therefore less good shots a little more forgiving . In terms of detail view , stereo image and naturalness he gives nothing to the M51 .

Which DAC is the best? Hard to say . Both DACs guarantee a high-quality music reproduction . The choice also depends on your audio system and your tastes . I would in any case the NAD M51 listen , because that really is a spectacularly good DAC . The M51 is in many international reviews praised , and rightly so , because he has a lot of qualities . But remember : garbage in is garbage out .
If a Naim set , it will rather choose the Naim and then to the DAC V1 excellent DAC , which is not quite as good as its big brother , but there is audible descends. Unfortunately, the fine DAC V1 is slightly underestimated . That is unfortunate and totally unwarranted , as evidenced by this comparative listening test .
Depending on the rest of the audio system would both DACs " happily " live .
