בהקשר הנדון אני רוצה לצטט תגובה של REG מתוך דיון בסוגיות דומות לאלו שתוארו כאן : I think the magazines do not emphasize measurements because the readers do not want them emphasized.
These seems quite clear in Stereophile, where many letters seem to come in(and get published) saying in so many words that the author of the letter ignores the measurements. Hardly ever any more does one see any letters raising the question of given the measurements, just exactly what justifies the price of some expensive small speaker over the dirt cheap PSB Alpha B1 (which has quite nice measurements) or other such questions.
And of course one thinks of the sad fate of Audio, an excellent measurement-based magazine which died, in spite of a last ditch effort to have more emphasis on review by listening. Too little, too late. I miss Audio.
Of course as we have often discussed, listening is the final test. As Lord Rayleigh famously said "The ear is the final arbiter"
Everyone who has read my remarks on automated room correction knows that I believe this in a very explicit and definite way.
In no way would I advocate replacing informed human judgment of what sounds right with some arbitrary measurement criteria.
BUT and a big but it is, things like frequency response graphs for speakers are a much more reliable and repeatable way of conveying certain types of information, not about what is good but about what is there , what actually exists, than is verbal descripion.
How many words would it take to describe the exact effect of all those zigs and zags up and down in response?
Sit down with an EQ device and push bands up and down a very little, say 0.5 dB. The sound will change in every case. Now ask yourself how on earth you could even imagine that it would be possible to have this information conveyed in words of sonic description.
This is clearly not going to happen. Instead what has happened is that people are simply ignoring the fine details of frequency response effects--or worse are describing them as something else(slightly up high treble= transparent sound etc.).
I would say that this is really clearly the case. Does anyone really think that they can read a review and then walk in and deal with this: Go in and listen to a speaker as it is and with some small EQ bumps introduced without knowing which version is which. Forget about right. Just ask yourself could you tell from reading the review which one had the EQ and which did not? Of course, if the EQ bumps are huge, yes. If the speaker is described as bass lean and an EQ of +10 dB has been introduced at 150 Hz, yes, you will know.
But when it comes to microEQ effects, which are even so definitely audible, I don't think so. This is not because reviewers are bad--some of them are very perceptive. It is because one cannot describe the information in the ordinary vocabulary available. There are not enough words and not precise enough words.
One really throws away a very great deal by switching to verbal description. Gordon Holt used to supply a graph, not a measurement graph but a graph of response as he heard it. This helped. But of course if you do the measurements right, the measurement graph will show the response as you will hear it! Interpreting speaker measurements is tricky, but it is far from impossible if one practices a little. And one finds out far more at least about certain things than one finds out from verbal descriptions , even the best verbal descriptions, if enough measurement data is supplied and if it is interpreted correctly. This is not to mention that it serves as a reality check (how about those PSB Alpha B1s)
