MUTTER’S MENDELSSOHN MONUMENT
The artist celebrates the composer’s bicentenary in grand style
Dear Subscribers,
Anne-Sophie Mutter is in the Deutsche Grammophon spotlight as the Yellow Label commemorates the 200th anniversary of Felix Mendelssohn’s birth. The great violinist’s personal tribute to the German early Romantic master is a CD/DVD, including documentary, presenting the F major Violin Sonata of 1838 and the D minor Piano Trio of 1839 along with the E minor Violin Concerto of 1845. For this occasion, Mutter has rerecorded the Concerto for the first time since her famous 1980 collaboration with Karajan and the Berliner Philharmoniker. Her new collaborators are Kurt Masur and the venerable Gewandhaus Orchestra, whose music directors in its long history have included both the Leipzig-born Masur and Mendelssohn himself. Mutter’s distinguished partners in the chamber works are André Previn and Lynn Harrell.
Anne-Sophie Mutter will also be touring the world with the Mendelssohn Concerto in 2009, starting in North America this month with New York Philharmonic concerts under Kurt Masur, followed by the Montreal Symphony Orchestra under Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos and the San Francisco Symphony under Michael Tilson Thomas. In May she will play the work throughout Europe with the Oslo Philharmonic under Jukka-Pekka Saraste and with the Dresden Philharmonic under Kurt Masur. In June, Mutter, Previn and Harrell will be performing Mendelssohn’s D minor Piano Trio in Germany, including a concert at Leipzig’s Gewandhaus.
Anne-Sophie Mutter relates that, while she has always loved Mendelssohn, she recently found a new appreciation of the music’s depth when she allowed herself to play it “as exuberantly and youthfully” as she’d always wanted to but hadn’t dared earlier in her career, “afraid it wouldn’t be meaningful enough, or German and stern enough”. Her passionate, thrusting new reading of the Concerto, in collaboration with Maestro Masur, today’s foremost Mendelssohn conductor, will come as a revelation to her many admirers and lovers of Mendelssohn’s immortal masterpiece. Says Masur: “Her virtuosity and esprit in the last movement is breathtaking.” And the New York Times has already acclaimed the performance’s freshness: “The Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra plays with a transparency that highlights the composer’s classicism. Mutter performs with a fervent warmth that results in a particularly vital and glowing rendition of the second movement.”
On 15 February at 19.00h, ARTE television will be broadcasting “Anne-Sophie Mutter & Mendelssohn”/”Anne-Sophie Mutter joue Mendelssohn”, featuring her Leipzig Gewandhaus performance of the Violin Concerto with Kurt Masur plus the finale from the D minor Piano Trio with André Previn and Lynn Harrell.
