I felt no problems in using the H90 to evaluate every speaker in this issue, as well as using it with my reference
Wilson Duette Series 2. The point of the Hegel H90 is it’s a ‘do no harm’ amplifier.It simply takes the signal and makes it sound like it shouldthrough loudspeakers. If the music is well-recorded, it will
sound good. If the music isn’t well recorded, it will sound…OK. But the joy of the H90 is that it can do this to far moreexotic loudspeakers than you might ever imagine a £1,500amplifier doing. And with loudspeakers more in line with theprice, the combination sounds excellent. Ultimately, this isan amplifier with staying power, like the H80 before it. Youcould happily use the H90 with a pair of reasonably pricedloudspeakers today, upgrade the speakers significantlywithout needing to touch the amplifier. Like its predecessor,only more so,

An amplifier in which the virtues combine clarity, transparency, resolution and well-being with engaging, involving playback.
Tonal completely neutral in all positions.
Deep, not thickened or short-tempered bass with punch and tempo.
Completely inconspicuous center band without accents or dents; good fine resolution and natural reproduction of all instruments and voices.
Just as neutral and informative, well-resolved overtone.
Excellent fine and rough dynamics with quiet, medium and also louder rendition, although macrodynamically somewhat limited compared to more powerful representatives of the guild.
Above the built-in DAC, a stage image that is rather deep than wide and at the same time plays forward, in a manner of speaking a "shoe box" whose front fifth projects into the room. Only the localization sharpness of the sound sources outside the middle could be a little better. The analogue inputs, however, are extremely transparent in this - as well as in the other - disciplines: what goes into "spatial representation here" also comes out.
A digital equal to the digital inputs and comfortable streaming unit.

The new H90 takes much from its predecessor and the Røst, and in the process manages to squeeze a lot of sophisticated improvements and an even better sound into a remarkably familiar affordable design. It also retains Hegel’s ‘giant killer’ status, despite its on-paper humble 60W power output. As Hi-Fi+Editor Alan Sircom said in his review, “the joy of the H90 is that it can do this to far more exotic loudspeakers than you might ever imagine a £1,500 amplifier doing. And with loudspeakers more in line with the price, the combination sounds excellent. Ultimately, this is an amplifier with staying power.”

Value and wrap-up

Hegel Music Systems maintains its well-deserved reputation for producing high-quality components with the H90 while bringing that quality down into the budget market. The H90 provides a balanced set of features that includes proven technologies and can integrate with equipment already on the buyer’s rack. In my time with the H90 I found nothing that it did wrong -- just a few defensible choices. This was my first experience with the Hegel sound in my home system, and I appreciated their minimalist philosophy of “do no harm,” in which the electronics get out of the way of the music. Including the SoundEngine technology of upmarket Hegel models, the H90 punches well above the level you might expect from a DAC-integrated at its price -- Hegel’s attention to dynamics, detail, and transparency shone through. The Hegel H90 is well worth hearing.
